A little about me...
Born and raised in the Chicago area, I grew up less than 5 miles from
O'Hare Airport. That meant I had to get used to watching TV and sleeping despite jumbo jets flying
directly overhead every couple of minutes!
Graduating from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1973 with a bachelor's degree in nursing, I was on
the road to my new home state of Colorado by 5PM the very day of graduation! I ended up specializing
in Obstetrics as a staff nurse, mostly in Labor & Delivery, and for a short while I was OB supervisor
at a major Denver hospital.
Fortunate enough to eventually find my soulmate, I married Zeke Zukowski in 1982. We were blessed
with a son a year later. But nothing could have prepared our new family for the tragedy of losing Zeke
in 1985 to a fatal construction accident.
Now basically a single parent, I reluctantly left hospital nursing and its erratic schedule, and
began my second career as a piano teacher and performer. I still enjoy doing both, entertaining
primarily at retirement facilities in Denver, Las Vegas and Chicago.
In 1997 I finally started doing something about one of my secret passions--writing. I joined
Colorado Romance Writers and Romance Writers of America. When Heart of Denver Romance Writers formed
in 1998, I became a charter member. Since then, I'm thrilled to say I have published numerous romantic
short stories and writing-related articles, finalled in and won several writing contests, and completed
my first novel-length manuscript.
I have never forgotten something a friend once told me while we worked together as nurse's aides
during summer vacations from college.
"I get a kick out of listening to you talk, Barbara. You have such an interesting way with words."
